Design showcase in Hannover Messe: birth of the digital twin with SAP

The SAP booth: design to operate & design to consume

Summer of 2022 has been kicked off by the trademark industrial trade fair in Hannover, the Deutsche Messe, where SAP also presented its industry 4.0 technology.

After long time spent restricted to the virtual space, the SAP booth members were excited to welcome the interested people in person to show how can SAP accelerate the digital transformation of its customers putting sustainability in the focus.

The booth has been divided into process industry and discrete industry areas covering the major business processes of manufacturing industries starting with product design to consume / operate.

At the fair it became obvious from the interest, that companies want to become design-driven and sustainable enterprises from manufacturing-focused firms to provide better products to their consumers.

Birth of the virtual DNA of a product: the digital thread

By creating the virtual model of the physical reality at each business process step, starting at the product design phase, enables companies to gain knowledge and collect information on their processes, assets and people leveraging the power of the digital transformation.

Using SAP software end-to-end allows to connect the digital twins into a thread, unleashing the advantages of an integrated system, enabling faster time to market and transparent processes across the extended enterprise.

Those times are coming to the end when it was sufficient to produce great products.
The 21st century requires constant optimisations of processes, the usage of natural and eco-friendly raw materials created in multi-purpose production sites, allowing highly configurable products delivered in a fast and carbon neutral way to the consumers anywhere on the globe.

Closed loop product design to accelerate time to market with SAP Enterprise Product Development

This requires frequent and fast changes of the product portfolio to enable enterprises to adopt to the latest trends and needs, gaining & keeping competitive advantage over the others.

To get there, it is indispensable to have the information stored via the closed loop digital thread and used in a change impact analysis to avoid time consuming and expensive rework causing delays in the downstream processes.

Experts were thrilled to learn about how SAP supports this via its SAP Enterprise Product Development and SAP S/4HANA offerings.

Capturing feedback, which can be structured and consolidated into needs are the basis for future product change requirements.
A well thought through assessment of a product change which can be orchestrated and controlled across the extended enterprise involving external suppliers, design partners or contract manufacturers into research and development process via efficient collaboration tools will make the deal to be faster and better than the competition right from design.

Summary

In the SAP booth of the Hannover Messe, experts could learn about how industry 4.0 can transform their businesses creating digital twins to form the digital thread connecting virtual and physical realities of their processes and assets at each step of their product’s lifecycles.

They also had the opportunity at the design area to try out SAP Enterprise Product Development and SAP S/4HANA capabilities to experience how can they close the loop between product development and the downstream processes.
